Five tips to extend the life of your resistance band

by Rahul Sharma 14 Oct 2025 0 comments

Unlike other training equipment, resistance bands are a relatively inexpensive way to add resistance to your workout. Despite their low initial price, you naturally want to enjoy your resistance bands for as long as possible. The lifespan of a resistance band depends on several factors, such as the quality of the band, how often you use it, and how you care for it. We'll explore this last aspect in more detail in this article. So, what can you do to extend the lifespan of your resistance band?

1. Attach the resistance band to smooth surfaces

The very first tip is perhaps the most important advice to follow. To maximize the lifespan of the band, minimize the friction between it and the attachment point. Therefore, only attach the resistance band to smooth, even bars, poles, and other surfaces. Several accessories are available to help you with this. First, there's the StreetGains resistance band handle . This is a special handle that fits around any resistance band. The handle not only extends the lifespan of the band but also increases the comfort of your resistance band workout. Finally, there's also the StreetGains door anchor . This door anchor expands the mounting options for your strap. It also reduces friction between the strap and the attachment.

2. Do not leave the resistance band in the hot sun

Our fourth tip is to avoid leaving the band hanging or lying in the hot sun. This doesn't mean you can't use the resistance band on a hot summer day, of course. You can use the band in the sun without feeling guilty, but don't leave it there after your workout.

3. Don't stretch the resistance band too far

A resistance band is characterized by its high stretch, but of course, there's a limit. You can stretch a resistance band up to 2.5 times its original length without any problems. Standard StreetGains bands are 104 centimeters long. This means they can easily be stretched to approximately 260 centimeters. You certainly don't need more! Stretching the band any further will only shorten its lifespan.

4. Avoid wet resistance bands

Whether you use a rubber or fabric StreetGains resistance band, it's best to avoid getting it wet. Want to train outdoors in the pouring rain? That's fine, but make sure you dry the bands thoroughly after use to prevent them from staying wet. Wet bands can damage the rubber over time, which negatively impacts the band's durability. So don't store your resistance bands in your damp backpack with a leaking water bottle. Dry the resistance band immediately after use and store it in the included StreetGains carrying bag.

5. Remove sand and pebbles from under the sole of your shoe

Are you using the resistance band to do things like pull-ups or bicep curls? Stepping on the band is inevitable. While this usually doesn't cause any problems, it can be a problem if your shoe sole is covered in dust, sand, and pebbles. The dirt acts like sandpaper on the band, causing damage and significantly accelerating wear. Therefore, always make sure the dirt is removed from under your shoes before starting your workout. Want to be completely safe? Take off your shoes and step onto the resistance band with your socks or bare feet.
